Tension Study

In between things, I like to give myself little briefs and time limits to explore and create. Mental exercises.

Here is a quick exploration of the concept of tension.

Two Letter Words

I am constantly examining the way letterforms interact to form words. This particular series examines the way two abstracted letterforms interact to form words and marks.

Mies van der Rohe Society

I was asked by the kind folks at Simple Honest Work and The Mies van der Rohe Society to design a poster to support the restoration of Mies’ Carr Chapel. I chose to focus on his iconic windows, perfect golden rectangles, and his rule of 3's. Less is more my friends.

See the post here.

From Here to Here

The final book in the 5 x 7 + Chicago series with artist, Ina Weise, was challenging and exciting. Our standard format did not work with her giant mountain drawings. So, we decided to have the 5x7 book fold out to 7x20 in From Here to Here.

FLOR (not produced)

Last year I pitched a new logo and extensive identity system to FLOR, the makers of beautiful modular carpet squares. Unfortunately, this direction did not go into production. Though the client really liked it, a far safer (and to be honest, more legible) typographic solution won out in the end. I heart this direction and never want to forget the thought that went into it.

Accent!

Accent was a concept typeface for Sharpie highlighters. Instead of highlighting words, I made words from highlighters. Simple. Silly.

Note Well

Note Well is a photographic journey by Debbie Carlos. I art directed and designed the book for 5x7 books. Buy it here.

Debbie's photos attempt to capture objects at their moments of greatest clarity: In certain light, at a certain time of day, in a certain place. The method is to wander and notice. Moments of quiet strangeness, patterns of light and shadow, minute-by-minute surprises, changes that don’t happen, something askew, something exactly in place, natural and artificial phenomena, are all sources of inspiration, and the subjects for her work.

Collections

This past summer The Post Family designed a show about collecting simply called, "Collections." We curated 213 jars of individual collections both small and large, infinitely significant and border-line garbage. Priced accordingly. We also created personal projects based on our interpretations of the theme. I love collecting paper so I decided to create something that i wish had in my collection. Giant square graph paper. Why has no one ever made giant square graph paper?
